Health Cards Bring Hope to Martin & Alfred
In the small village of Bweremana, DR Congo, five-year-old Martin Safari was once a cheerful boy living happily with his parents. But in April, disaster struck when rebels attacked. Martin fled with other children, leaving his home and family behind. Against all odds, he found his way to the Mugunga refugee camp in Goma, Eastern Congo. Unfortunately, his parents were nowhere to be found.
At the same camp, six-year-old Alfred faced his own set of tragedies. After fleeing with his family due to the war, a bomb claimed the lives of his parents and sisters, leaving him an orphan with a serious leg injury.
Introducing: Health Cards
Both boys recently received a crucial lifeline - a health card. A health card gives them access to medical care. Martin and Alfred were alone and scared but have found a glimmer of hope in the gift from a wonderful Home of Hope sponsor across the world.
Since receiving the cards, Alfred was able to get the medical care he needed, allowing his leg to heal and giving him hope for a brighter future and Martin has been treated for illness three times—care he wouldn’t have otherwise received. We continue to hope and pray for the day he will be reunited with his parents.
Just $6
The stories of Martin and Alfred show us the incredible impact of a health card. It is just $6 to us Canadians, but it is a literal lifeline for these kids. For those in refugee camps in DR Congo, these cards are not just pieces of paper—they are vital access to medical care. While their journeys remain tough, knowing they are supported by the generosity of Home of Hope sponsors gives them hope.
Your support helps these children face each day with a bit less fear and a bit more hope.
In June, we had a goal of raising money for 1,000 health cards. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we raised enough for 1,144 cards! Martin and Alfred are just two of 1,144 who have received their health card. If you’d like to contribute towards more health cards for children like them, click here.
